Definition : Overhead

Dernière mise à jour le 24 December 2023

Definition: This term comes from the English "overhead", to specify that the waves are relatively high (above 1 meter 80) to exceed the head of a surfer standing.

This generally indicates high waves that can be challenging. There's also the term "double overhead" and many others, to refer to the height of a wave.

Here's a short list of the different sizes to help you make sense of it all:

  • Ankle-high 30 cm (1 ft)
  • Knee-high 60 cm (2 ft)
  • Waist-high 90 cm (3 ft)
  • Chest-high 120 cm (4 ft)
  • Head-high 150 cm (5 ft)
  • Overhead 180 to 330 cm (6-11 ft)
  • Double overhead 360 cm (12 ft)
