You can't visit Costa Rica without sampling the local cuisine. Gallo pinto, Costa Rica's national dish, is a must. You'll find it in most sodas (small local restaurants) for between 5 and 10 euros.

I'll be honest with you though, local cuisine tends to receive negative reviews. Having personally grown up in the West Indies, I don't mind, quite the contrary. It's a hearty cuisine that doesn't lack taste. Some people will have a tendency

The best time to surf in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is bathed in a tropical climate, offering two distinct seasons the dry season and the rainy season. Each has its own charm and particularities, influencing the waves and the atmosphere on the beaches.

  • High season (December - April) The best time to catch the best waves on spots like Witches Rock, Playa Negra and Playa Grande. Expect ideal conditions, but also more crowds.
  • Low season (May - mid-November) Green season: Known as the "green season", it offers more consistent waves and fewer crowds. Perfect for those who want to surf in peace and quiet!
  • Mid-season (May - July, November) This period offers lower fares and milder weather, often with night rains, providing welcome relief from the heat of the day.

During the dry seasonFrom December to April, the sun is out. It's the ideal time of year for those looking for steady waves and mild weather. The beaches are busier, and the atmosphere is more festive. It's the perfect time to take full advantage of the surf spots, nightlife and other activities the country has to offer.

Visit rainy seasonThe summer season, from May to November, is often overlooked by tourists, but that's a mistake! Tropical rains, usually of short duration in the late afternoon, give way to sunny mornings and exceptional surfing conditions. The waves are more powerful and the spots less crowded, offering a more authentic and intimate experience.

After the rain, the spots also become glassyThere are plenty of surprises in store. Finally, prices are also slightly lower, which is an advantage for a relatively expensive country like Costa Rica.

During the rainy season, there is still a significant risk of thunderstorms and rainespecially inland. For example, I drove 10 hours from Tamarindo to Pavones in uninterrupted rain... The SUV will be your ally for braving puddles and other muddy roads...

Budget for a Surf Trip in Costa Rica

Costa Rica, while a dream destination, can also be surprisingly expensive. With the boom in tourism, mainly from North America, prices have soared, especially in coastal towns.

The navettes partagées are also a cost-effective alternativeespecially if you're traveling alone or in a small group.

Costa Rica's must-see surf spots

Recommended central location: Tamarindo

Vibrant and lively Tamarindo is the ideal starting point for your surfing adventure. Located on the northern Pacific coast, it offers easy access to a myriad of surf spots, from Witches Rock in the north to Playa Negra in the south.

For those seeking more tranquility, Nosara or Playa Grande are perfect options.

Surf spots in northern Costa Rica

Roca Bruja

Rosa Bruja, located in the Santa Rosa National Park, is a true jewel for surfers. With its hollow waves on a sandy bottom, it's a popular destination for world-class waves.

Land access to Rosa Bruja is currently closed, leaving boats as the only way to reach this iconic spot. Boat trips offer not only access to the waves, but also opportunities for snorkeling, fishing and marine wildlife observation.

The park has limited capacity, with only 50 tickets available per day for surfing. It is therefore essential to book in advance. The best time to surf at Rosa Bruja is during the rainy season, when waves can reach up to 2 meters.

Ollie's Point

First of all, let's talk about access: Ollie's Point is a bit like a hidden treasure that's easily accessible. by boat only. You can set off from Playa del Coco or Tamarindo, but remember, the adventure begins as soon as you cross. And once there, you're guaranteed peace and quiet. No crowds, no noise, just you, the sea and the sky.

This spot is a real paradise for intermediate to experienced surfers. We're talking about constant waves of around 3 meters on a good day, with south-westerly swells that promise a thrilling ride. And the icing on the cake? The takeoff area right next to the rocks for a gentle entry, followed by a long ride that will take you back to the beach

For optimum conditions, aim for the low to medium tide with a good southerly swell. And that, my friends, is surfing nirvana. But beware, Ollie's Point can be capricious during high tide, revealing rocks lurking beneath the water.

This spot is fairly isolated, so for accommodation, head for Playa Grande, Tamarindo or Playa del Coco. And if you're the adventurous type, why not camp on site? Don't forget to say hello to the Santa Rosa National Park rangers at check-in.

In short, Ollie's Point is the perfect blend of isolation, powerful waves and wilderness. So, if you're up for the challenge, get your boards ready and set out to conquer one of Costa Rica's best waves.

Playa Grande

Located just half an hour's drive from Tamarindo, although only a kilometer away as the crow flies (a bit of walking wouldn't hurt), Playa Grande is a haven of peace for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of tourism.

This exceptional spot is particularly popular with advanced surfers. With its mix of breaks left and right on a sandy beach, it promises unforgettable sessions. Conditions are optimal when the swell comes from the south-southwest, offering perfect waves, especially around two hours before high tide.

The ideal months to make the most of Playa Grande are from December to Apriland july and augustThe spot has two main areas: the "T" and the "T", guaranteeing quality waves and good weather. The spot is divided into two main areas: the main section and Palm Beach Estates, each with its own characteristics and challenges.

All in all, Playa Grande is the ideal place for those looking for a surfing experience that's a little more fun. authenticaway from the crowds and in harmony with Costa Rican wilderness.

Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra

These two beaches in the Guanacaste are known for their moderate development, boutique hotels and charming restaurants. The waves here are less crowded, offering a more intimate surfing experience. This is the area I enjoyed most on my last trip to Costa Rica.

Playa Avellanas is my favorite surf spot in Costa Rica. Located just 30 minutes south of Tamarindo, you can reach it by car from Tamarindo or via Paraiso.

But beware, if you decide to venture out during the rainy season, be prepared for roads that are a little more... shall we say, "adventurous"! There's going to be a lot of mud and the risk of getting stuck in the mud. The SUV has saved us more than once.

When it comes to waves, Playa Avellanas is a little paradise for all styles of surfer. Whether you're the type who likes to take it easy on your longboard or looking for thrills in shortboardYou'll find what you're looking for here. From small soft waves to fast ones, there's something for everyone.

From reefsand, a river mouth, all in one place. This makes for a truly complete spot.

And if the waves at Playa Avellanas won't suit you one day, don't panic! Playa Negra, with its hollow reef break, is not far away. About 45 minutes south of Tamarindo, this little corner of paradise offers a nice hollow wave.

When the tide is low and the swell is important, Playa Negra offers us barrels perfect and abrupt. When the tide rises with small swells, the waves become gentler, ideal for those who want to have fun without taking too many risks.

Surf spots in central Costa Rica

Playa Jaco

Located a short distance from San JoséThis beach was one of the first to receive the full force of the Pacific Ocean on the south coast of the NicoyaThis makes it ideal for all surfing enthusiasts.

Playa Jaco is distinguished by its easy, versatile waves. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, you'll find waves to suit your level.

The spot offers a beach break with numerous peaks, creating medium waves, but with remarkable consistency. The experience is at its best around one to two hours before high tide, with waves breaking on both sides over a sandy bottom.

Jaco, despite its somewhat haphazard appearance, is a town with an excellent surfing infrastructure, including numerous surf schools, inns and possibilities board rental. The beach is never too crowded thanks to its many peaks, allowing everyone to find their own wave...

Last but not least, Jaco is not just an isolated surf spot. It's the center of five or six great surf spots, offering a variety of waves that are more consistent than spectacular. Nearby beaches such as Playa Hermosa and Playa Herradura are the perfect complement for surfers of all levels.

In short, Playa Jaco is the ideal place for those who want an authentic and varied surfing experience in Costa Rica, accessible to all levels.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is a hidden gem also located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, just 10-15 minutes from Jaco. This surf spot is a paradise for surfers. intermediate to advancedwith powerful, varied waves that include lefts, rights and a few closeouts.

Playa Hermosa offers a quieter atmosphere than Jaco, ideal for relaxing after a surf session. For nightlife lovers, Jaco is close by, with a multitude of accommodation and entertainment options.

Accessible in less than two hours from San José, the beach stretches for around 10Km, offering a diversity of spots to explore. Places like Roca Loca, El Gato, and Terrazasare perfect for discovering different types of waves.

Beware though, the beach has its dangers, like crocodiles, stingrays and strong currents.

Pavones and southern Costa Rica

Pavones: the endless point break

If you're a surfer looking for a truly unique experience, then Pavones in Costa Rica should definitely be on your list. Located in the south of the country, Pavones is renowned for offering one of the best longer left-hand waves in the world, a feature that makes it a must-see spot for surf enthusiasts.

However, to reach this exceptional spot, prepare yourself for a journey that is an adventure in itself.

Count on about 10 hours drive from the Tamarindo region, which can be a challenge, especially for those with limited time.

But believe me, it's worth the effort!

What makes Pavones so special is not only its mythical wave, but also the need for a swell of the right size and direction so that the wave isn't too fast. It's a bit of a trek to get to this spot, and accommodation is also limited.

As you can see, Costa Rica offers a Surf Trip tinged with nature and adventure, with its lush flora and fauna. The friendliness of the local people will also make your trip even more enjoyable. Last but not least, the lack of crime will make your Surf Trip a stress-free moment of discovery, and that changes everything. What are you waiting for, then, to experience Pura Vida!
